Ariana DeBose, ‘Encanto’ & More Land Oscar Nominations

Nominations for the 94th Annual Academy Awards

Nominations for the 94th Annual Academy Awards (aka the 2022 Oscars) were announced Tuesday morning (February 8) and a handful of Latine talent were recognized for their work and films.

Earning the first Oscar nomination of her career is Ariana DeBose for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. DeBose’s road to the Oscars has included a Golden Globes win and nominations from the Critics Choice, Screen Actors Guild and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. DeBose’s nomination comes almost 60 years to the day that actress Rita Moreno earned her Oscar nom in the original film for playing the same role.

In the Best Animated Feature category, Encanto took one of the five nominations back to its casita, which got Latine Twitter buzzing Tuesday morning. Encanto was co-directed and co-written by Charise Castro Smith, although she, unfortunately, isn’t included as one of the nominees. The nod, of course, is fantastic for Encanto and its fans, but we’d all like to see even more Latine talent behind the scenes when telling these stories.

Also, two other Latine filmmakers earned Oscar nominations in the Animated Feature Film category. Co-producer Phil Lord received the second Oscar nom of his career for The Mitchells vs the Machines. He won an Oscar in the same category when he co-produced 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Co-director Carlos López Estrada also landed his first Oscar nom for Raya and the Last Dragon.

Composer Germaine Franco, who became the first Latina composer ever invited to join the Academy’s music branch, picked up her first Oscar nomination for Best Score for the animated film Encanto. Also, for Encanto, songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda earned the second Oscar nom of his career in the Best Original Song category for “Dos Oruguitas.” His first nomination was for the song “How Far I’ll Go” from 2016’s Moana.

In the Best Animated Short Film category, Hugo Covarrubias and Tevo Díaz earned an Oscar nomination for their film Bestia. Set in 1975, the Chilean short tells the story of a woman who works as a police agent for Chile’s military dictatorship.
